Psychotherapy is sometimes called talk therapy because it is based on conversations you have with a trained psychotherapist, psychiatrist, therapist or counsellor. In a confidential setting, together with the therapist, you discuss the parts of your life that you would like to improve. But speaking is simply a way of discussing a large number of experiences in an attempt to learn more from them. Counseling and psychotherapy are interchangeable, that is, they overlap in several ways. One might argue that the key difference is the length of time working between client and therapist; that is, the number of sessions in which the client and therapist meet. I would say that while this is potentially a factor, it is possible to do brief therapy work with clients as both a psychotherapist and a counsellor. One of the requirements for my education and qualification as a psychotherapist is proven work with clients, which includes both short-term and long-term therapy.
